What are your plans for ringing in the new year? We highly recommend celebrating the arrival of 2020 right here in Kotor, Montenegro. Whether by day or by night, our city has plenty to offer!

Daytime Plans

Spend the day on a walking tour of the city to learn the history, myths and legends of the beautiful palaces and buildings that line our city streets. There’s so much to learn and a lot of great material to photograph as well.

Getting hungry? Stop by our AS Snack Bar for light bites with anything from beer to pomegranate juice… the options are plenty. We’re sharing the festive spirit in this Cattaro Hotel pub as well with a beautiful Christmas tree and sparkling lights.

Finally, be sure to take a stroll alongside the water of the Bay of Kotor. It’s a beautiful and inspiring place, surrounded by mountains which reminds many people of a combination of the fjords and Lake Como. This is something you definitely won’t want to miss.

The New Year’s Eve Party

Cattaro Hotel guests have the privilege of joining some of the most desirable views of Kotor’s New Year’s Eve activities. Why? The city’s big official party takes place right on the main square, The Square of Arms, which is the same square all of our properties surround- our hotel, Napoleon’s Theatre, Restaurant Citadel and AS Snack Bar. Presented by the Tourism Organization of Kotor, join us on Tuesday, December 31st and Wednesday, January 1st for “Rock New Year 2020 Kotor”.

The December 31st lineup will feature the legendary Serbian rock band, Partibrejkers, Slovenian band Lačni Franz and the Montenegrin band, VIS Tetra, which features members from our capital city of Podgorica. The January 1st lineup will feature the Serbian rockstar, Bajaga, Croatin punk rock band Hladno Pivo and the local Montenegrin rock band, Light Under The Black Mountain, which features members from Kotor and Herceg Novi.

Staying at Cattaro Hotel

Upon entering the lobby of our historic boutique hotel, you’ll notice just how much we’re in the holiday spirit! If you’re new to the traditions and history of the Balkans and our country, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know we’re home to one extra-long holiday season. Thanks to the mix of religions in our country, our holiday decor remains up well after December 25th in preparation for three more holidays: New Year’s Eve on December 31st, Orthodox Christmas on January 7th and Orthodox New Year on January 14th. We invite you to share the holiday energy with other guests and hotel staff.

Tip: Request a room that faces the main square to secure extra special views of all of the New Year’s Eve activities!

How long have you worked with Cattaro Hotel?

I’ve been working with Cattaro since February 2016.

Through your eyes, what makes Cattaro Hotel such a special place to stay?

The history of the building in which the hotel is located, the entire story of Napoleon’s Theater, and Providence Palace and Tower all equate to a special level of praise that cannot be said of many hotels in the world. The building itself is on the UNESCO list of cultural heritage sites. Of course, that honor focuses on the preservation of its identity and appearance to remain the same as when it was created.

The hotel’s location on the main square, Square of Arms, is also something special. It’s located in the heart of the city, and at the same time, it offers peace and privacy.

If a visitor only had time to see one place on their trip to Kotor, where would you recommend they go?

There are so many places to see in Kotor, and even more interesting stories to hear. Some of the stories are in the realm of legends, and some are true occurrences. They all add up to one whole, in which Kotor leaves visitors breathless. If I had to choose, I’d single out the Fortress of San Giovanni in Kotor and the island of Our Lady of the Rocks in Perast.

What kind of services and experiences do you offer that most people do not yet know about?

Very few people know that on the Cattaro Hotel terrace, which has the capacity of only sixteen guests, they may enjoy our fine dining restaurant. Gastronomic enjoyment, total privacy, five-star service, and located in the center of the city on the main square. That is something we must work on, from a marketing standpoint.

Do you have any upcoming news for 2020 to share?

We’re currently working on preparing new offers. First and foremost, we want to offer our guests the daily ability to enjoy tastings of Montenegrin cuisine and Montenegrin wines at Restaurant Citadela (part of Cattaro Hotel), guided by our chef and sommelier. Also, this year we’ve only just opened the door, but for next season, we will offer interested guests the ability to visit Škurda Canyon (only 300m from the hotel), presenting what is still an undiscovered pearl in our surroundings.

It will expand our offerings, and Kotor and Cattaro Hotel will gain a new dimension of tourism. Alongside our cultural offerings, we will offer guests adrenaline experiences too.

Note: Cattaro Hotel is the recipient of two new awards- 9.2 Excellent ratings from Kayak UK culminating in Best Hotel 2019 and Best Luxury Hotel 2019!

Summer may be over as far as our calendars are concerned, but the truth is that summer has not yet left the beautiful seaside destinations, our nation’s capital (Podgorica) and many other great places to visit in Montenegro. In contrast to the buzzing, busy streets and beaches of August, September is a tranquil time. School has started, the majority of travelers have returned home and there are considerably less concerts and social events on the calendar. This makes September the perfect time to have your “summer” holiday in Montenegro and a number of in-the-know tourists and savvy locals would agree.

Our waters are still perfectly warm enough to swim any time of day and the temperatures still accommodate excellent beach days. For example, this week we’re enjoying temperatures ranging in the 30° C to high 20’s range.

Sightseeing in Boka and Beyond

If you’ve never visited Kotor before or even if you have and still have places to see, September is the ideal time to see all of your desired destinations. You’ll enjoy more intimate settings with smaller to no crowds at such places as the Roman Mosaics in nearby Risan, Our Lady of the Rocks in Perast in the middle of the bay, the 1,000-step hike to Castle of San Giovanni above Kotor’s Old Town and the famous Blue Cave at Luštica Peninsula. Tell us your wishes and we can make all of the arrangements. In fact, we offer a special speedboat tour including a few of the previously mentioned destinations.

historic-boutique-hotel-cattaro-tours-speed-boat-big

Since it’s so fast to get around the roads in September, it’s also a great time to set up a base here in Kotor and then go out for day trips to other places to explore. Boka Bay is spectacular but it’s not the only exciting place to see while you’re here. Stay within our medieval walls and head out to a new destination each day. The beautiful capital of Podgorica has exciting restaurants, cafes, art galleries and museums to explore, as well as the Plantaže Vineyard (book your wine tour today), waterfalls, rivers and the nature-filled Gorica Park.

Wine tours - Cattaro tour

For seeing more of the sea, follow our country’s coastline to discover one stunning beach after another, each unique in its own way. There’s Budva with a younger Old Town of its own, St. Stefan with crystal clear waters, fine sand beaches and the iconic islet of the same name. There’s also Bar with historic destinations, a marina, great nightlife and one of the world’s oldest olive trees, Stara Maslina (over 2,000 years old). You can continue on to Ada Bojana for kitesurfing, horseback riding on the beach, windsurfing and spectacular seafood in a bohemian atmosphere or visit the other side of the coast to walk Herceg Novi’s stone streets and climb the Forte Mare Fortress, enjoy the beaches, take in a cultural event and more.

Your Stay at Cattaro Hotel

If you plan to make Cattaro Hotel the base for your stay, you’ll be enjoying the pleasure of staying in a piece of history. We’re proud to be a member of Historic Hotels of Europe, a highly-regarded association of hotels in castles, monasteries, palaces and more. You’ll be surrounded by history while receiving all of the comforts of any modern hotel experience, including Wi-Fi, use of our high-tech gym, multiple dining options. We have an in-house chef and culinary team and offer specific buffets, a restaurant on the Old Town’s citadel, a pub next door and even afternoon tea.

You have the recommendations- now it’s time to experience Kotor for yourself. Let us host you within the UNESCO-protected walls of our historic boutique hotel. Call or email us today: +382 32 311 000 | +382 67 209 847 | +382 67 209 847 (Viber) | CattaroHotel@t-com.me.

You already know Cattaro Hotel is home to plenty of fun, history and excitement, but did you know it’s also the central base for some of the most important decision making in the region? It’s true! Every Wednesday, you can catch Rotary Club of Kotor members congregating for yet another week of organizing many of the city’s most important humanitarian and philanthropic activities and initiatives.

Rotary Club of Kotor: Members and Activities

Kotor’s Rotary Club members are locals in wonderfully diverse professions: photographers, hospitality managers, small business owners and more; in fact, our very own general manager of the Cattaro Hotel complex, Janko Racković, is one of the most active members in our local rotary club. The group meets every week to work on organizing activities for good causes. Some of the latest feel-good contributions from the group include donating two new personal sailboats to the Lahor sailing club and collecting money on Earth Day for the purpose of eco-education in Montenegrin schools- and a collaboration with the local nursery, Mondo Verde, to donate graviola plants.

Over the years, the impact of Rotary Club of Kotor impacts local physical and mental health institutions, schools, neighborhoods, the environment, social causes, professional development, the arts and culture and more. Dr. Ranka Krivokapić is president of the non-profit organization. Visit Rotary Club of Kotor’s website or Facebook page for more information.

Interested in joining or meeting any of the members? Swing by Cattaro Hotel on a Wednesday night shortly before their 8 pm gathering commences- they’ll be happy to speak with you. Rotary Club of Kotor membership is available by invitation only, but it’s also a great idea to express your interest if you’d like to get involved.

The Object of Rotary International

“The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

  • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
  • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
  • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.”

Boka Cruise 2019

One of Rotary Club of Kotor’s most recent charity events was the second annual edition of Boka Cruise, held on the second day of this month. The event was a runaway success, bringing together Rotary Club members and their family and friends for a gorgeous summertime cruise on Boka Bay (The Bay of Kotor).

The event raised funds in financial support of a local, disabled young man with medical costs and an inability to work. Attendees had an amazing time dressed in maritime-themed looks while supporting an incredible cause.

Are you ready to explore Kotor and the beautiful seaside of Montenegro? Book your flight today- we’re conveniently-located near three airports: Tivat, Podgorica and Dubrovnik (Čilipi).Visit alone, with friends or for business – or come to experience the country with your entire family. June continues to be the most popular month to get married. It’s the height of wedding season even though it’s often possible to throw beautiful nuptials year-round. Interestingly enough, the tradition of tying the knot in June stretches back to the times of worshipping gods and goddesses in Rome. Juno was the goddess protector of women, with a special focus on childbirth and marriage.

Weddings in 2019

Of course today’s modern wedding ceremonies look a lot different. Modern travel, technology and a world of options at our fingers with just one click, have transformed how weddings look today. Most weddings are “Instagram-friendly”, filled with picturesque scenarios perfect for impactful, social media ready photos. Any given business is only as good as its team, and this fact only rings more true when it comes to businesses in the hospitality industry. We’re fortunate to have the talented, professional and courteous staff that we do, and they make up a great part of what makes guest experiences at Cattaro so special.

This time we’d like to share our reception team’s perspective of Cattaro Hotel…

The Reception Team: Andrijana, Mate & Mile

Interview questions answered by Mile.

How long have you worked at Cattaro and what do you enjoy about the hotel most?

I’ve been working at Cattaro Hotel for three years.

The feeling when I meet guests’ expectations and the expression of satisfaction on their faces are the daily moments that fulfill me most. Partaking in the creation of the hotel image, raising the level of service, the commitment of every guest’s wish to feel as if he or she is in a familiar atmosphere – something I’m certain can’t be felt in large hotels – fulfills me entirely. I especially value the exceptional collegial atmosphere and honest relationships with my colleagues and management.

You are the first impression when guests first arrive to the hotel. How do you make them feel welcome?

To the first impression on the guest on his or her arrival to the hotel, like the first impression which I leave as the receptionist impacts several factors.

The arrival time is one of them. Every guest is welcome at whatever hour, but moments when I have several arrivals at the same time are special stories. Taking care to have the shortest wait times at reception upon arrival, smiles arrive in addition to welcome beverages. Sometimes it’s water with lemon, other times domestic juices, sometimes coffee and tea, cakes, fruit… With a caring feeling of attention to listening to expectations, I extend a room to some guests, I situate some in the lobby and I present everyone with our delightful historical hotel, while presenting our additional offers (restaurant services, massages, room service, minibars…)!

At Your Service at Cattaro Hotel Kotor

It’s important that no guest ever feel neglected! Welcome with a smile and drink! First of all!

What do guests say they love most about their experiences at Cattaro?

The guests most love the fact that they’re staying in a 15th century complex located in a UNESCO-listed cultural world heritage site, sleeping in a providential palace, and having breakfast on the terrace of Napoleon’s Theatre. You can imagine the proud feeling of a Frenchman when he realizes he is sitting in the building of Napoleon’s Theatre.

Experience a Piece of History at Cattaro Hotel

With all of these facts, the hotel ambience which exudes history, paintings of famous personalities throughout history in the region of Kotor, and the location on its own are what give our hotel a luxury note and separates it from others, and that’s what guests value highly.

Besides that, they highly value dedication, warmth and a familiar connection.

Cattaro Hotel Reception

Do you have any special guest stories to share?

Those kinds of stories are daily stories here, but I’ll single out a recent one…

Namely, we had the opportunity to see guests from Sydney, Australia during breakfast. They met with a priest from Sydney who married their daughter two years ago in their city, and who was also a guest in our hotel! You can only imagine what kind of coincidence that was in the same hotel in little Montenegro, thousands of kilometers away from Australia, they were so surprised and happy… So that with certainty, we can confirm the old saying, ‘It’s a small world’.

We’re incredibly proud of the food, wine and overall culinary experiences offered here at Cattaro Hotel. From our daily morning breakfast on the balcony overlooking The Square of Arms to our special Chef’s Night series events featuring bespoke, wine-paired menus by our head chef and visiting chef’s from across the region, we take cuisine seriously.

However, like anything else at our property, our food is only as good as our team. That’s why we’re grateful to have the talented Bojan Fržović, head chef of Cattaro Hotel.

Interviewee: Head Chef Bojan Fržović

How do you deliver an authentic Montenegrin culinary experience to hotel guests?

Exclusively domestic products, which are very rich- it’s only that they are not commercialized in the right way they deserve. However, it’s very important that guests have the chance to try our domestic products.

What are the highlights of the hotel’s breakfast? Brunch?

The top breakfast ingredients are exclusively of domestic origin like bread below the sač, cheese pie, spinach and cabbage, smoke domestic products, cheeses in oil (goat and cow cheeses) and Njegoš prosciutto, domestic jams and juices such as elderflower, currants, cranberries, rose hip… The accent must be placed on domestic teas with the irresistible honey we’re proud of!

Breakfast at Cattaro Hotel Kotor
Breakfast at Cattaro Hotel

Which meals come the most highly recommended?

The snack – you can say it’s a almost-forgotten in-between meals dish, but I think that with a little effort, it won’t be difficult to make it to remind us of regular and healthy nutrition.

Fresh Tomatoes

What is your process for planning meals for corporate clients or couples planning their destination weddings at the property?

The selection of good foodstuffs is wide. It’s a little problem that they don’t exist in great quantities, but if we combine that quality which we have and we move ahead without some standards which were set years back, I think that we can have a very good offer.

It requires a little more work to join the north and south to provide guests with the traditional quality products of Montenegro.

Natural Honey

Which 3 Montenegrin dishes would you recommend to first-time visitors to Kotor?

First it depends on the client’s wishes and the setup of guests attending the wedding, party, et al. We compile the menu and make one unique experience. I give the potential client the ability to try as many different meals as possible. It’s most important that we first listen to our client and his or her wishes, then after we use our extensive experience to give advice or compile a menu we believe to be tailor-made to the setup of attending guests. We primarily place the accent on domestic dishes and our quality meat and fish.

We recommend octopus below the sač, fish and lamb stew in milk, but of course, I hope that in the future it will be between meals that will be improved, modernized, and commercialized. I will work on this personally.

Kotor Montenegro at Night

Do you have any new menu offerings coming soon you’d like to share?

I have more meals, but I would single out veal steak with currant sauce, marinated lamb prepared for 12 hours, roasted in salt and octopus salad and smoked rib eye steak and crab tail in a sauce of honey, almonds and lime.

Jorg Zupan & Matjaž Zagradišnik Share Thoughts on Food, Wine and Cattaro Hotel

We caught up Jorg Zupan & Matjaž Zagradišnik after an amazing Valentine’s Day edition of Chef’s Night at Cattaro Hotel. The Slovenian chef and wine professional shared their thoughts on dining, fine wine and what it was like to visit Kotor and Cattaro Hotel.

What was your first impression of Kotor when you arrived in preparation of Chef’s Night? Your first impression of Cattaro Hotel?

JZ: My first impression of Kotor was that it’s a gorgeous city, especially the Old Town, which is truly something special – with walls, squares, the church and the fortress. Cattaro Hotel is also very beautiful and I really like the theme of maritime paintings which decorate the halls and rooms.

MZ: When you’re driving on the road to Kotor, one thinks “wow”, and with every kilometer it becomes more and more interesting. When you arrive to Kotor and see that super beautiful place surrounded by hills filled with history, you’re left simply without words – it’s very beautiful. Honestly, Cattaro Hotel surprised me with how much you feel the history in this place – it’s unbelievable. I like the design, the position, the rooms are incredible and you feel as if you’re in a palace of some sort.

How much is atmosphere important for a good meal? What do you believe to be the most important details for a good meal?

JZ: The most important details for a good meal are the ingredients and foodstuffs. The cooking techniques follow next… but without the highest quality ingredients, there are no highest-quality meals.

What is your favorite dish- and where have you eaten your finest meal?

JZ: I think that the best dish doesn’t exist… perfection doesn’t exist!

What do you consider to be good wine?

MZ: If you ask me, there is no bad wine. All wine is good, it’s only a matter of personal taste. For me, personally, good wine is that which has not been experimented upon by the winery. Instead it’s clean, genuine wine that must be honored.

What are your three favorite varieties of wine?

MZ: My favorite wine… hmm… there are many of them. I love wine from Clai Winery in the Croatian region of Istria. Also, Carolina White from Jakončič Winery and for a sparkling wine, Bjana Rose from the Gorizia Hills.

How do you see the future of food? Or which new trends in fine dining will be even bigger in the next few years?

JZ: I think that this trend of “natural” food and the concept of “less is more” stayed with us for a long time, which makes a lot of sense. Molecular gastronomy was like a wave that came, added some useful techniques to the craft and left. But fermentation, investments, local ingredients and the relationship with the people who carry these foodstuffs (butchers, fishmongers and farmers…), that’s something that makes a lot of sense. It will last much longer than any trend.
