More and more people are traveling more frequently than ever- whether for business-related trips, extended journeys or vacations for the holidays. At the same time, we’re busier than ever, working longer days thanks to factors including smartphones, tablets and email. Therefore, on any given trip, chances are you only have a few days to spend in a single destination… but how can you make the best of it? Well, tourists who visit us here at Historic Boutique Hotel Cattaro stay for an average of two days; if you plan to spend 48 hours in Kotor- we have all the information you need.

Morning One: History, Hiking and Cultural Immersion

First things first, begin your day exploring the historic Old Town of Kotor. With roots stretching back to 5th-century BC, the UNESCO-protected heritage site offers much to uncover. Roam on your own or take a guided tour to leave with intriguing facts about the city’s founders, the various cultures that have called this city home, secrets of the wealthy families who prospered here over the centuries and more. Save some energy for a trek 1350+ steps (an elevation of 1200 feet) up to St. John Fortress, also known as the Castle of San Giovanni. The vertical hike is home to numerous nooks and crannies to explore, as well as a wonderful solution for combining exercise and sightseeing- certainly take your camera. You’ll be privy to a multitude of spectacular views of Old Town Kotor, The Bay of Kotor (part of the Adriatic Sea) and other nearby locales including the small seaside towns of Muo and Prčanj.

Evening One: Eat Like a Local

When dinner time rolls around, opt for lunch with a view-visit Restaurant Citadel at Cattaro Hotel. Perched atop the city’s walls, the eatery offers local cuisine and international favorites along with views inside and outside of Old Town Kotor. Then head to Pub AS for a nightcap with travelers and locals.

Morning Two: Breakfast, the Bay and Afternoon Tea

Have breakfast on the iconic balcony of Cattaro Hotel, overlooking the Square of Arms just within the city’s old walls. Reserved for hotel guests only, you’ll enjoy a rare perspective to start the day right.

Next, take a speedboat to explore the Bay of Kotor, including stops at places like the village of Perast and Risan to explore a beautiful fishing village and Roman mosaics. Also, make a stop at Our Lady of the Rocks to visit one of the most picture-perfect travel spots in Montenegro, a church in the middle of the bay.

Did you know Kotor has both Roman and Venetian roots? In fact, locals in Kotor and the surrounding area of Boka speak a particular dialect of the Montenegrin language that features an Italian infusion. For example, the word for plate in Italian is piatto and the local word for plate is pjato.

Finally, in the afternoon, return to Cattaro Hotel for classic afternoon tea

Evening Two: Yachts and Entertainment

Find out why Porto Montenegro has become one of the most talked-about destinations of Europe. Take a short drive over to the city of Tivat for world-class designer shopping, exciting bar scenes, family-friendly activities, delicious dining, arts and cultural events and more.

Summer may be over as far as our calendars are concerned, but the truth is that summer has not yet left the beautiful seaside destinations, our nation’s capital (Podgorica) and many other great places to visit in Montenegro. In contrast to the buzzing, busy streets and beaches of August, September is a tranquil time. School has started, the majority of travelers have returned home and there are considerably less concerts and social events on the calendar. This makes September the perfect time to have your “summer” holiday in Montenegro and a number of in-the-know tourists and savvy locals would agree.

Our waters are still perfectly warm enough to swim any time of day and the temperatures still accommodate excellent beach days. For example, this week we’re enjoying temperatures ranging in the 30° C to high 20’s range.

Sightseeing in Boka and Beyond

If you’ve never visited Kotor before or even if you have and still have places to see, September is the ideal time to see all of your desired destinations. You’ll enjoy more intimate settings with smaller to no crowds at such places as the Roman Mosaics in nearby Risan, Our Lady of the Rocks in Perast in the middle of the bay, the 1,000-step hike to Castle of San Giovanni above Kotor’s Old Town and the famous Blue Cave at Luštica Peninsula. Tell us your wishes and we can make all of the arrangements. In fact, we offer a special speedboat tour including a few of the previously mentioned destinations.

Since it’s so fast to get around the roads in September, it’s also a great time to set up a base here in Kotor and then go out for day trips to other places to explore. Boka Bay is spectacular but it’s not the only exciting place to see while you’re here. Stay within our medieval walls and head out to a new destination each day. The beautiful capital of Podgorica has exciting restaurants, cafes, art galleries and museums to explore, as well as the Plantaže Vineyard (book your wine tour today), waterfalls, rivers and the nature-filled Gorica Park.

For seeing more of the sea, follow our country’s coastline to discover one stunning beach after another, each unique in its own way. There’s Budva with a younger Old Town of its own, St. Stefan with crystal clear waters, fine sand beaches and the iconic islet of the same name. There’s also Bar with historic destinations, a marina, great nightlife and one of the world’s oldest olive trees, Stara Maslina (over 2,000 years old). You can continue on to Ada Bojana for kitesurfing, horseback riding on the beach, windsurfing and spectacular seafood in a bohemian atmosphere or visit the other side of the coast to walk Herceg Novi’s stone streets and climb the Forte Mare Fortress, enjoy the beaches, take in a cultural event and more.

Your Stay at Cattaro Hotel

If you plan to make Cattaro Hotel the base for your stay, you’ll be enjoying the pleasure of staying in a piece of history. We have an in-house chef and culinary team and offer specific buffets, a restaurant on the Old Town’s citadel, a pub next door and even afternoon tea.
