Summertime in Kotor means a lot of things- swimming, al fresco dining, visitors from around the globe…. Still, maybe nothing says Kotor in the summer as much as culture and the arts. The Old Town becomes an open air theatre, beginning with nearly two weeks of performances (July 1st – 12th)  for children and their families- the 27th edition of the Kotor Festival of Theatre for Children.

The art presentations, performances and activities span disciplines including music, theatre, puppetry, dance and more. What’s more, the creative thrills have been dreamed up and performed by incredibly talented artists and cultural organizations scattered across the globe.

Here’s a sample of a few of the shows you can expect…

Ivo Vizin – The Captain of Dreams (Monday, July 1st)

Presented by a Montenegrin theatre production company, the festival kicks off with this 1 hr. 20 min. show appropriate for children 12 years of age and older. It’s a heartfelt story about a boy living long ago in Boka (the area in which Kotor is situated in Montenegro) who had a dream to circumnavigate the world. While he may have grown up in poverty, he understood the most important trait of a hero isn’t ability or possessions but a kind heart,

Museum of Dance (Tuesday, July 2nd)

A contemporary dance troupe comes to town from Serbia for an interactive play and installation. Designed for children 3-7 years of age, this show dazzles with choreography and drama.

The Town Musicians of Bremen (Wednesday, July 3rd)

A production company from Turkey comes to town for a special black light Kotor Festival of Theatre for Children Audienceperformance of the Grimm Brothers story, The Town Musicians of Bremen, for children 4 years of age and older.

The 10th Festival of Strings

Ready for some musical entertainment? The Festival of Strings will be sweet Theater Puppets in Kotormusic to your ears July 3rd to July 10th (no performances on July 4th). Performances include “Cinderella”, “Stringed Postcard From Vienna”, “Full Sails”, “A Step Forward” and more.
